About Paragon
Engineering
Paragon Engineering was founded in 2006. Since our founding we have strived to be extraordinary in business. We exist to be the customer’s trusted advisor in matters pertaining to their power distribution installation. We advise and advocate the customer to maximize revenue and minimize system down time.
After IST or final commissioning is completed and your consultant has moved on to another project, Paragon can fill that void for the service/upgrade of your system.
Shore Power
When the California Air Regulatory Board passed stringent air quality regulations 20 years ago, the need to shut down the in-port ship’s engines became paramount. Transferring to cleaner shore-based utility supply was the only option. Paragon Engineering was at the forefront of the design innovation and has supplied over 60 designs of Shore Power/Shore Box throughout the world. The seamless transfer of 6.6 KV power for container ships and 11.2 KV for cruise ships greatly reduced the carbon footprint of ports in the western USA.
Paragon Engineering served on the steering committee of IEC 80005-1 and 80005-2 which regulates the design standards for Shore Power applications.
We are currently in the design phase of a Shore Box application based on ANSI standards, not the IEC power distribution footprint that was utilized in the past.
Assessments and Field
Engineering
Equipment assessments are requested when a facility is acquired by a new owner or it’s been several years since a proper preventive maintenance plan was followed. The owner will reach out to the Original Equipment Manufacturer who will in turn send a technical sales specialist. The sales specialist only focuses on “OEM Approved” offers for rebuild or replacement.
The other commonly used option is the customer hires an engineering firm for the assessment. The engineering firm then reaches out to the OEM for information. Ironically, the customer ends up with the same solution.
There are several real-time good asset evaluation software platforms available in today’s market. They are a “hosted” solution with a monthly service charge. The purpose of the software is to recommend rudimentary field services and long term to advise the customer of obsolete equipment for recommendations of replacement.
The asset evaluation software is not normally compatible with Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) from the previous generation of products.
Risk Assessment
Matrix
Paragon Engineering spent years in the field working for OEMs servicing, upgrading and retrofitting electrical distribution systems and their associated controls. Over those years we developed a software application that by answering very simple questions produces a real world view on where the “risks” are in a customer’s system. The Risk Assessment Matrix (RAM) tool produces a graph that shows you were you have the most vulnerability.

The Huge Change in the Emergency Power Landscape
SInce September, 2017 the "Big 3" (ASCO, Russell Electric, Zenith) OEMs for Emergency Power Systems (Paralleling Switchgear) have changed hands. Schneider Electric purchased ACSO from Emerson Electric in September, 2017, Zenith became part of ABB when they purchased...
Risk Assessments
Almost 30% of Paragon Engineering's system Risk Assessments are second opinions. The customer either hired someone else or had the Original Equipment Manufacturer representative perform a site assessment. Somewhere in that assessment the customer either feels they...
